Day Four: Tensleep Canyon to Buffalo, Wyoming
Monday, June 9, 1997

We awake to have our second Mountain Man Breakfast. This time Cooky found a bunch of lard in the cooler and decided the potatos outta fry-up real good in that stuff, before putting them in the dutch oven. Memphis also thinks a little more bacon grease will be better in the Mountain Man Breakfast. Some of us think that was not such a good idea. They outta stick to the recipe and not try experimenting on our young digestive systems. But, Cowpoke goes for seconds (photo).

After breakfast, the sun starts warming up the canyon and Reynold gives us a demonstration and a try at rock climbing. He's brought along his gear and even puffs his hands up with some white powder. Them shoes he is wearing kinda look like they belong on a ballerina, though. Cooky and the Cowpoke want no part of that. Bill stays down at the camp--he's gonna to listen to birds and commune with nature today.

Well, 10 o'clock rolled around and Cooky said it was time to drive over the Bighorns to Buffalo so we could meet the Penn State group at noon. Once in Buffalo, we proceed to eat lunch at Hardees and look for the Penn State group to arrive after having their morning tour of the Wyodak Coal mine. We were supposed to meet them at the Hardees but find them at the Texaco instead. That's where the liqour store is, as it turns out. Leading the field camp is Duff Gold as well as the legendary Doc Hoover.

Well, we find out from Doc that due to all the rain, the road to the Dinosaur dig is impassible and that the travelling field campers, who have been on the road for quite while, will just have to set up their camp early and catch-up on laundry and tiding up their maps and field notes. Guess that's why Doc's got that big brown bag under his arm, must be some kind of stain remover in there.

Too bad that the dig was flooded-out. But the kids stock-up on fireworks at the stand run by the older gentleman who likes to talk a lot. He was telling about all the things he used to sell as well as various business enterprises he's involved in. He shook his head though and said some of the folks over in Tensleep is just lazy.

We check out downtown Buffalo. The kids purchase leather medicine pouches at the leather and hide shop. Cowpoke and Cooky notice that the lawn mower fella sure seems friendly with the proprietor's wife. I suspect the proprietor is up in the hills trapping. Personally, if I was the lawn mower fella, I wouldn't want any misunderstandings with anybody who can skin hides that good.

Well, we head back over the Bighorns but have time to try some side roads. The map shows a fire tower located a couple of miles up a dirt road, so we drive on back. Within about a mile of the tower, a pine tree has fallen across the road so we decide to turn back as look at the creek we just crossed. We play roll the big stump into the creek. Hey their must be a law against having this much fun.
